What we refer to as headaches may occur very frequently in various areas of the head like for example behind the head, in the upper neck or ears. In addition, headaches are usually not taken as a disease, but rather a symptom of another disease. Causes for headaches are many and these causes could vary from one person to the other. Moreover, as in certain cases the treatment is quite tough, it is important to correctly diagnose the cause of headache.

Before any treatment, the headache should be first categorized. There are there are numerous ways to categorize headaches although the most well known method was introduced by the International Headache Society. There are three main types of headaches according to this categorization and each specific type tends to have a separate cause.

Primary cause of headaches are one of the major kinds of headaches and could be further classified as tension headaches, migraine headaches and cluster headaches. In tension headaches, the major cause of headache is physical or mental stress. It is said that almost 90% of all adults would experience tension headaches during their lives. Compared to men women appear to be more prone to experience tension headaches. Migraine headaches are also a frequent kind of headache with nearly 12% of the US population (around 28 million people) experiences this form of headache. Although both of these headaches are very common, cluster headaches are rather rare with affecting only 0.1% of the population. The precise reason of headache in both migraine related and cluster headaches are not presently known. None of those mentioned above however are fatal.

Although the cause of headache in primary headaches might not be life threatening, secondary headaches might indicate a far more dangerous condition. Due to conditions like meningitis, brain tumors, strokes and encephalitis secondary headaches could come about. Therefore, it is imperative that you seek medical attention when your headaches are accompanied with symptoms such as seizures, continuing nausea and vomiting, and vision, speech and behavior changes. Another serious type of a headache is referred to as cranial neuralgia where swollen nerves in the head and neck tends to the reason for the headache. In addition to this, facial pains and other different headaches are also included.

It should be remembered that although many headaches may be temporary relieved by painkilling drugs such as paracetamol and asprin, it is vital to seek medical attention if the headache persists heavily. Additionally, the painkilling drugs including paracetamol should be used in the recommended doses as an overdose may result in negative effects such as heavy liver damage which would at times prove to be life threatening.

Does your head constantly ache? Have your headaches impeded your work and also resulted in concentration problems? Likelihood is you have been suffering from tension headaches. Tension headaches are very annoying. Most people who suffer from tension headaches do not pay much attention to it during the first few days thinking that it would go away. A good idea of tension headache symptoms is required to deal with it.

Often tension headaches are not accompanied by throbbing pain, as you find in migraine headache symptoms. The pain isstill intense and can stay for quite a while. It is said to be the most common form of headaches.

Tension headache symptoms last a minimum of half an hour but could go on for several days depending on the amount of stress and work that you face. It is essential for you to discover the elements resulting in tension headache symptoms,to find a proper cure for the headaches. One of the main causes of migraine headaches as well as tension headaches is stress, both physical or emotional. The best way to combat stress would be to get yourself more sleep at night. You would also want to take some rest during the day and not overexert yourself whether it is at work or in school.

Bringing about a change in your lifestyle could lead to a reduction in the frequency of tension headache symptoms. Poor posture could result in tension headache symptoms causing aches and pain in the back and neck, which in turn lead to severe headaches. Often these symptoms include tightness around the shoulder and neck, apart from the pain. You may also suffer from loss of appetite.

Tension headaches could also turn into chronic tension headaches if not treated soon. This could be judged by how learned by looking at the frequency of your headaches}. Usually, it would be considered chronic, if your headache occurs for around 2 weeks each month for a few months.

Over the counter prescription drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin work well for the pain. If the headache worsens however, you would want to consider visiting your doctor who would then prescribe a drug that would work for
you, given your condition.

Acupuncture is another commonly used method of treatment to deal with tension headache symptoms. The theory behind this is that relief and healing takes place when thin needles are inserted into the skin at certain points.

Various exercises that are known to provide relaxation are what you would need to consider. The best forms are yoga and meditation which are known to provide serenity. Water aerobics is also known to provide the same sensation.

Migraine headaches can very easily cause a person to lose daily function and enjoyment of life. Preventing and treating migraine headaches, however, is certainly possible with the right combination of medicine and therapy. The exact causes of migraine headaches remain unknown to the medical community, but it is widely held that serotonin levels in the brain play a significant role in the formation of migraine headaches. Low serotonin levels are usually accompanied by a migraine headache.

Migraine headache symptoms can oftentimes be accompanied by an “aura.” An aura occurs when a classic migraine headache begins to develop. In a classic migraine attack, the patient may note changes in vision and mood. Tenderness in the scalp is usually a sign of a developing migraine episode. Mood swings are also common, such as depression or irritability. These subtle symptoms can begin developing as much as a full day before the onset of a migraine attack. The following migraine headaches usually come about with a high degree of intensity, but do not last long.

Common migraine headache symptoms are a more prolonged variation of the problem, and can last for long periods of time. This can be seriously debilitating, and can be a real impediment to daily life. Fortunately, many medications exist to alleviate migraine pain. Sleep and plenty of fluids are crucial factors in migraine episode prevention. During an attack, go to a quiet and dimly lit area. Use a cold compress to reduce the tension, and massage the scalp with a fair amount of pressure. Emotional and physical stress are known to play a role in migraine development. Some foods are also believed to play a significant role in migraine development.

Physicians recommend, for example, that sufferers consider avoiding red wine altogether. Canned and processed meat are also known as frequent causes of migraine headaches. Cause of headaches can also include excess amounts of caffeine, aged cheese, or cultured dairy products. If you suffer regular migraine headaches, see a physician for a full list of foods and beverages that should be avoided.

Hormonal Headaches are a serious and often times debilitating form of headache that effects only women. Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone are known to be behind hormonal headaches in women. Hormonal headaches are a part of the overall premenstrual cycle, and can begin eleven to seven days before the menstrual cycle. Symptoms of hormonal headaches typically involve fairly serious pain not unlike a migraine, usually accompanied by a sensitivity to light and loud noises. The pain can typically be described as a throbbing like sensation.

A large percentage of women will eventually experience a hormonal headache. The occurrence of hormonal headaches can be hard to predict, although contraceptives are known to have an effect on their frequency. In some women, oral contraceptives can actually increase the occurrence of hormonal headaches, while in others it ends up reducing the frequency of the headaches. Accurately predicting the effect that oral contraceptives will have is difficult. Outside of contraceptives, the the real reasons behind hormonal headache remain unknown. Preventing hormonal headaches can be difficult, or at least hard to do.

Fortunately, treatment for hormonal headaches can potentially be far more effective. Over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can do a good job of handling the symptoms of hormonal headaches. Treatment with these over the counter drugs around five to seven days prior to a menstrual period can mitigate their effects. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen are all effective treatments for hormone headaches. These NSAID medications can possibly also play a role in reducing other premenstrual symptoms.

Migraine medications, such as triptans, are another tool in the arsenal against hormonal headache pain. Although not a direct treatment for the cause of the headaches, triptans can significantly reduce the associated pain. Triptans and NSAID medication should be used wisely when attempting to reduce hormonal headaches, because they can cause reactions if overused. Overuse of both triptans and NSAID medication can result in what are known as “rebound” headaches, where the symptoms emerge even stronger after the effects of the medication has worn off.

In addition to the premenstrual cycle, Hormonal Headaches also emerge during high hormone level periods. The early periods of childbirth can cause significant fluctuations in hormone levels, and this can easily trigger severe hormonal headaches. The days after childbirth are also a prime time for hormonal headaches to occur. Menopause can also frequently be associated with hormonal headaches.

Did you know that some smells cause headache?

Its true, the intoxicating or stupefying fragrances of some perfumes and room fresheners are some of the odors, that if you inhale them long enough, you will find that these smells cause headache. This need not be something that you have used on your own body. It can be a perfume that your neighbour has used. So if you sit next to person and feel that your head is getting woozy, try to move to a safe distance away. Maybe 5 or 10 feet away if necessary!

Unless of course it’s your wife, then that’s a different story.

You should also remove your hair gel before you go to bed. Hair gels can maybe give you that great look but take care to remove it from your hair before you go to bed. Not only is it bad for your hair to have it on for to long, but it is all chemicals and it is bad for you to sleep all night inhaling these chemicals and the mild perfume that most hair gels have, these smells cause headache.

Hair gel also has the effect of sealing off all the pores on your scalp. So in the night, the skin on the scalp of your head cannot breathe and this is bad for your head as well.
